Principal's Message
![]() Mary Bragg Elementary School is proud of its diverse student population and long tradition of academic excellence. Hard working teachers, high expectations in the classroom and strong parent support at home have helped Bragg students perform exceptionally well on school and state wide student achievement assessments. Mary Bragg’s Academic Performance Index (A.P.I.) grew 20 points during the 2006-2007 school year to an outstanding 880!Our student centered academic instruction, enrichment and intervention programs are guided by our newly updated Mission and Vision statements.
Mission StatementThe Mary Bragg Elementary School Staff provides an exceptional standards-based instructional program that motivates students toward becoming independent critical thinkers and life-long learners. Our school fosters the importance of the school-home partnership that values commitment to learning. Our staff and community share the goals of preparing students to become productive and responsible participants in a complex, technology-based society, together with becoming respectful, informed, and caring citizens in a culturally diverse world.
Vision StatementThe staff at Mary Bragg Elementary School values each student and is proudly committed to instilling a rich tradition of academic excellence and high expectations in every student. Students will be well-rounded, life-long learners with academic and social skills that empower them to be responsible, contributing members in an ever-changing and diverse world.
Last year Mary Bragg compiled teacher data and state test scores to create English Language Arts and Mathematics enrichment and intervention programs. The enrichment and intervention programs used teacher-designed curriculum, the online LarsonMath.com program and McGraw Hill’s SRA English Language Arts materials to reinforce grade level subject standards. Our programs were run during the school day, after school and at student homes online. Our first year results were promising and these English Language Arts and Mathematics programs will be expanded at Mary Bragg.
This year all third through sixth grade students will review and practice the Mathematics standards they learned that week with the online Larson Mathematics Program during their weekly computer lab time. Parents and students will be able to access the same online program at home to practice even more! Each student’s results will be compiled and shared with classroom teachers. This same data will be used to create very specialized, teacher taught after school Mathematics interventions for the students who need them.
Mary Bragg is the home to a very dedicated and supportive P.T.A. Bragg’s P.T.A. actively supports our standards based curriculum inside and outside the classroom. Our P.T.A. sponsors the Meet the Masters Art Program, enrichment assemblies, donates funds to offset student intervention costs and funds student field trips to the Los Angeles Zoo, the Gene Autrey Western Museum and the Long Beach Aquarium.
This year we will open the school year with a newly reconfigured and updated school library. We have expanded the library’s floor space, adding new shelving, chairs, tables computers and wireless internet access.
Last year thirty-four computers were donated to Mary Bragg from our new technology partner Golden West College. This year Golden West donated 50 more computers and our Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.) purchased wireless access points and software so a second computer lab can be opened on campus.
Student and family activities abound at Mary Bragg. An active Student Leadership Program helps students establish and hone their leadership skills by planning and running school wide activities. Mary Bragg has one of the largest elementary school band programs in the district. Evening family activities like Skate Night, Trunk or Treat, Story-Telling, Book Fairs and the Father/ Daughter and Mother/Son dinners are held throughout the school year.
Student recognition is another important part of our educational program. Eight times a year classroom awards are presented to students for academic achievement and good citizenship. Parents and family members are invited to our award celebrations so we can honor their student together.
Mary Bragg students have been recognized for their generosity and active participation in and outside our beautiful school. Students and teachers raised money to help victims of Hurricane Katrina and local relief shelters. The American Red Cross recognized our school’s generosity by awarding Mary Bragg the Elementary School Youth Fund Drive Trophy for 2006. Our school was also awarded a Proclamation from the City of Cerritos for conducting a school wide beautification project that included planting flowers in front of classrooms, recycling cans and bottles and establishing student teams to pick up trash at recess and lunch.
Great students, fantastic teachers, supportive parents, innovative programs, strong community partnerships and enriching activities make Mary Bragg Elementary School a very special place for every student to learn and grow.
